Dortmund is part of the Ruhr-area, so that many cities are reachable by public transportation. It only takes 10 minutes from Dortmund to Bochum with the regional express or 20 minutes by S-Bahn. The next major city would be Essen. The city of Essen can be reached in 20 minutes from Dortmund’s Main Station.
A dense network of public transportation and also the closeness of the cities in the Ruhr-area allow people to travel from one city to another at most in 40 minutes. That gives you as international students the opportunity to see as many cities as you want to because you have got your NRW-ticket and that enables you to enrich your knowledge about the German culture in different cities and have a look at their cultural treasures.
As a student of the TU Dortmund University, you receive a ticket that is valid throughout North-Rhine Westphalia. It is called the NRW-Ticket (NRW is short for North-Rhine Westphalia).
With this ticket you are able to travel the whole state without paying extra money. It gives you the chance to see as many cities, sights and monuments as you would like to. Just to name a few: Cologne(Köln in German), Düsseldorf, Essen and so on.
For example, in Cologne there is the famous Dome (highest Cathedrale in the world) you can walk up and have a fantastic view over the city.
Or you can go to the Königsallee in Düsseldorf where shopping is an easy affair.
These cities can be reached via the Main Station of Dortmund. To Düsseldorf, for example, it is a 50 minute ride. These links show you the train schedules and show you where you have to switch the train and when you reach your destination.

Here is a direct link to the plans that hang out at bus or train stops. Just enter the city 'Dortmund' and the stop 'Universität'. Then choose DO-Universität and after that you can choose which plans you want as pdf file. Don't forget to press 'Fahrplan anzeigen'.
If you want the other plans, type in 'Hauptbahnhof', 'Reinoldikirche' or e.g. 'Palmweide'.
Here are the most important plans as pdf file (downloaded from the same place):
The S1 is the train which goes from the main station in Dortmund over the University, Bochum, Essen, Duisburg, and Düsseldorf to Solingen.
Here are the plans for the University in both directions.
Here is the plan from the Main Station towards the University.
Here is the plan for the Nightbus 8 from 'Reinoldikirche' to the University.
You need this one if you wanna go out at night, because the bars are usually closer to this stop than to the main station. However, the train is a lot faster than the nightbus, so if you don't mind to walk 5 minutes, take the train S1, which goes every hour as well on weekends and only has a short off time during the week between 2 and 4.
